Acura TLX 0-60 Times: Behind the Pack

By: Max F. Arellano / March 28, 2024

The 2024 Acura TLX 0-60 time ranges from 4.7 seconds in the Type S trim to 5.6 seconds in the 4-cylinder A-Spec trim.

For 2024, the Acura TLX receives a mid-cycle refresh, which includes a redesigned front bumper, new tire options, an updated infotainment system, and new color options: Urban Gray Pearl, and Liquid Carbon Metallic -  it's amazing how 3 adjectives can be used and I still have no idea what either of those colors are supposed to be.

If you exclude the FWD variant of the 4-cylinder TLX, which has yet to be tested, these are the two powertrains available:

2024 Acura TLX Type S

  • 0-60 time: 4.7 seconds
  •
  • 1/4 Mile: 13.5 seconds
  •
  • Engine: 3.0 Liter Turbocharged V6
  •
  • Transmission: 10A
  •
  • Drive Type: AWD
  •
  • Body Style: Sedan
  •
  • Horsepower: 355 HP
  •
  • Torque: 354 lb-ft
  •
  • MSRP: $57,428

While 4.7 seconds is a fast 0-60 time, it's uncompetitive with the Type S's rivals. The Audi S4 gets to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and is a few thousand dollars cheaper.

Meanwhile the BMX M340i xDrive is about the same price and almost a full second faster.

4.7 seconds makes it about equal in speed to the entry-level, 2.0 liter Toyota Supra, which costs ~$10,000 less.

One silver lining is that the 2024 Type-S is slightly faster than the pre-refresh Type S, by about .4 seconds.

2024 Acura TLX SH-AWD A-Spec

  • 0-60 time: 5.6 seconds (Est)
  •
  • 1/4 Mile: 14.3 seconds (Est)
  •
  • Engine: 2.0 Liter Turbocharged Inline-4
  •
  • Drive Type: AWD
  •
  • Transmission: 10A
  •
  • Body Style: Sedan
  •
  • Horsepower: 272 hp @ 6,500 rpm
  •
  • Torque: 280 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm
  •
  • MSRP: $51,195

This version of the TLX has not been tested after the mid-cycle refresh, however, given the slight improvement in the Type S, and the fact that the powertrain remains unchanged,  a conservative estimate puts the 4-cylinder trim 0-60 time at about 5.6 seconds, .2 seconds faster than the previously tested TLX A-Spec in 2021.

Similar to the TLX, this makes it slower than its rivals by about half a second, with both the BMW 330i and the A4 getting to 60 mph in around 5 seconds.

Even the much more affordable turbocharged variant of the Mazda3 has been recorded with a similar 0-60 time.

Summary

The Type S and A-Spec versions of the TLX come with a higher price tag but don’t offer the quickness you’d expect for their price range.

It'd be a better idea to either look at other cars in the same category that give you more speed for the money or choose a less expensive model and save some cash.

1st Gen Acura TLX 0-60 Times

Now that we've looked at the current generation of TLX, let's look into the past and see if its acceleration was always disappointing.

Analysis

The 1st generation of Acura TLX was introduced with the 2015 model year and similarly featured inline-4 and V6 engine options.

The inline-4 variant was only available with front-wheel drive, whereas the 3.5 liter V6 had an optional AWD system. Neither engine was turbocharged.

While some outlets referred to the TLX of this era as handsome - a stupid adjective to describe cars - to me it looks like it was born to rot in a used car lot, with a design that screams heavy, slow, and boring.

I can't imagine anyone ever left the dealership excited to drive it.

Anyways, looking at the 0-60 times, you'll notice that the V6 had comparable acceleration to the current, inline-4, whereas the 1st gen inline-4 took more than 7 seconds to get to 60 mph. Like with the current generation, the V6 TLX was slow compared to its competitors, which were about a second faster.

The situation was even more dire for the inline-4 TLX, which had downright embarrassing acceleration for its class.

For example, the 2015 Audi A4, which cost the same as the TLX, had a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds, almost a second and a half faster.

Conclusion

Acura TLX 0-60 times have always been well behind the competition. Combined with the fact that it has never undercut competitors' pricing and has been aesthetically meh at best, it's hard to see how anyone ever found the TLX appealing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest Acura 0-60?

The title for the fastest Acura in terms of 0-60 mph acceleration belongs to the Acura NSX, a hybrid supercar.

The NSX boasts an impressive 0-60 mph time of approximately 3.0 seconds, thanks to its advanced hybrid powertrain combining a twin-turbocharged V6 engine with three electric motors.

What is the fastest TLX model?

The fastest model in the TLX lineup is the Acura TLX Type S. With a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engine, the TLX Type S achieves a 0-60 mph time of approximately 4.7 seconds, combining luxury with high performance in a sport sedan package.

Is the Acura TLX V6 fast?

The performance varies across different generations. The inaugural generation of the Acura TLX, equipped with a V6 engine, marked a 0-60 mph time around 5.8 seconds.

In the context of its competitive set, it might not have been the fleetest, yet in absolute terms, it could accurately be characterized as brisk.

Transitioning to the current generation, the TLX adopts a turbocharged V6 engine, enhancing the 0-60 mph acceleration by more than a second, firmly positioning it within the realm of 'fast'.
